About the opportunity 

The State Government Engagement Officer will be responsible for proactively engaging with state and local governments, state government business enterprises or partly government owned or funded bodies to identify external funding opportunities and make the critical connection between funding opportunities and researchers across the University. This position will work closely with members of the Commercial Development and Industry Partnerships unit and researchers across the University to maintain and develop relationships with key state and local government agencies. This role will report to the Director, Commercial Development and Industry Partnerships with regular consultation with Faculty Deans and Associate Deans of Research. This will ensure a uniform and coordinated approach to state and local government engagement across the University while meeting the specific needs of the Faculties and its constituent Schools.

  • Tertiary qualification with substantial commercial experience, preferably in a business development or senior commercial role.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters.
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively with senior management inside/outside the University, academic and administrative staff and research students.
  • Experience in developing and promoting tertiary level engagement and project development programs within the areas of Medicine, Science, Engineering and Information Technologies and Arts and Social Sciences.
  • Ability to constructively manage multiple and complex stakeholder relationships and competing priorities without losing momentum.
  • An understanding the state and local government contract and tendering processes.
  • Ability to develop competitive proposals for government tenders
  • Organising collaborative events, workshops and sandpits to bring together researchers and industry to create engagement opportunities.
  • Contacts and current networks within state and local government agencies.
  • Proficiency in scoping, planning, negotiating and managing complex arrangements with commercial partners.
