Location Profile

Ashburton Primary School has a school population of approximately 570 students and is located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.  The school has an excellent academic reputation within the community. The partnership with parents is an integral component of the success of the school.  The school community provides strong support for the school through active involvement in School Council, Parents, Association, Class Representative System, classroom support for learning programs, camps / excursions and social and fundraising activities.  Each year our fundraising activities contribute generously to locally raised funds that support Department of Education funds to run our school.  We greatly appreciate the efforts of our school community who show support and enthusiasm for all that occurs within our learning community.

Action characterises school life at Ashburton Primary School.  Everything we do is guided by three simple principles. They apply to our students, our staff, our families and all other members of the APS community. The principles are:

Be. We are positive and optimistic people. Our students are motivated, dedicated and resilient; confident, thoughtful and supportive. They lead in many ways, showing good judgement. Our staff and families model this behaviour, guiding our students to fulfil their potential, well equipped for the next phase of their life.

Know. Active learning is the centre of the Ashburton model: a partnership between students, staff and families that fosters enquiry, creativity and critical thinking on a foundation of core academic excellence, and physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Learning at APS is collaborative, stimulating and developmentally appropriate.

Contribute. We thrive on working together to foster community cohesion: within the school, our local area, and beyond, demonstrating respect, acceptance and social responsibility.

Our school Values of Responsibility, Respect and Resilience underpin all interactions between community members are supported through the Student Engagement and Wellbeing policy and the SMILE Program.  The SMILE program is delivered weekly by the classroom teacher and is pertinent to the needs of the students at that time.

Students have access to a wide variety of multimedia devices and software including Apple laptops, iPads, digital microscopes and interactive whiteboards.  We are an Apple school which enables access to dual platforms.  This enhances the student’s choice to apply the appropriate software program for the task.

The success of this approach has been demonstrated by our exceptional student outcomes in national achievement tests and the development of strong parent and local community partnerships.  We celebrate the excellence of all our students. Assemblies, weekly newsletter and the website provide opportunities to publicly acknowledge the wide variety of achievements and efforts of our students.

Our student’s educational journey is enhanced by our new and modernised learning spaces aligned to the exclusively designed developmental programs aimed to meet the needs of 21st Century learners. Team teaching is used extensively across the school in all year levels. Three light filled pods of classrooms offer flexible learning spaces, access to presentation areas, wet areas and connect seamlessly with the outside environment.  These have been built around a central plaza, looking onto the historical double storey main building.  The 5/6 learning suite occupies the upper floor with the lower floor for administrative purposes.   The new Arts Precinct houses a purpose built art studio, media studio, television studio and library.  The gymnasium complex includes a full sized basketball stadium adjoined to the Performing Arts Hall, commercial kitchen, dance studio, internal toilets and access to community rooms.
