The Flight Safety Foundation has a 71-year history as a Not-For-Profit organisation for advocating on all matters relating to aviation safety. The Melbourne office of the Foundation manages the Basic Aviation Risk (BARS) Program in support of the contracted aviation function for the resource sector, government and humanitarian organisations.

The Program has been operating for 8 years and has registered aircraft operators from 33 different countries worldwide. Over 530 audits have been conducted in the history of the Program, 15 different analysis reports derived from the data generated in the Program, 20 conference presentations and 6 different training products created.

The audits are conducted by accredited audit companies with the role of the Foundation being the oversight of the quality aspects of the auditing, review of the data associated with the audit, oversight of the contracted companies and development of the BAR Standard on behalf of the Member Organisations.

The office is a small team of highly motivated and talented individuals keen for the BARS Program to make a positive difference in the world of aviation safety and risk management.

Growth and expansion of the Program to additional sectors such as RPAS, offshore helicopters and aerial mustering has provided a need for additional staff in the technical area of the company.

We are looking for a person to fill the role of Senior Audit Manager to support the team with their experience in aviation auditing, leadership in delivery of high quality Program deliverables such as training, education, reporting and science oriented safety system performance.

Roles and responsibilities for the position will include:

  • Review of aviation audit data leading to the publication of accurate and high quality audit reports;
  • Manage the drafting and publication of documents and manuals, both internal and external, related to the BARS Program;
  • Assist in the auditing of BARS Program contractors and complete the follow up auditing activities as part of the internal quality assurance program;
  • Conduct analysis of the data derived from the audit program and other external data; 
  • Execute the delivery and ongoing development of the BARS Auditor training and other training associated with the Program.

Expressions of interest are sought for a suitably qualified and experienced person meeting the following criteria:

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Formal qualification as an aviation lead auditor to meet the prerequisite criteria as a BARS Auditor of a minimum of 10 aviation audits and 2 years’ experience as an aviation lead auditor;
  • A licence issued by a national aviation authority and 8 years’ experience in aviation related discipline related to flight operations or maintenance & engineering;
  • Tertiary education in safety, human factors or aviation science is preferred;
  • Ability to communicate to senior management both within the Foundation and with external stakeholders;
  • Sound understanding of quality principles and auditing standards;
  • Sound understanding of safety management systems and ICAO Annex 19;
  • Excellent IT skills, specifically MS Excel and MS Access and PowerPoint;
  • Highly organised and able to prioritise multiple activities;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment;
  • Close attention to detail.

Experience and Background

  • Excellent written and verbal English skills;
  • Unrestricted passport and able to travel internationally;
  • International aviation experience will be well regarded;
  • Proven leadership experience with cultural and professionally diverse teams;
  • Qualification and experience with workplace training and education will be highly regarded;
  • Experience in the analysis of technical data.
