Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) is an industry representative body and not-for-profit membership organisation that works to add genuine value to Australia’s commercial apple and pear growers. It is a unique peak body with both a commercial and industry aspect. APAL owns, licenses and manages a number of fresh produce brands which includes the global leading apple brand Pink Lady®.

Based in East Melbourne but requiring national and international travel, the Export Development Manager is tasked with delivering export readiness to the Australian apple and pear industry. The role, initially funded through a Horticulture Innovation Australia project, is a cornerstone piece of the industry’s drive to be attractive and competitive in international markets. Working closely with apple and pear growers, packers, state based agricultural organisations, federal and international government representatives and Horticulture Innovation Australia, you will provide leadership and management expertise which delivers a sustainable export culture and market access platform.

This largely technical role will assist the Australian Industry to develop capability and preparedness across industry advice, Integrated Pest Management, Biosecurity, Food Safety and Supply Chain. Your experience in strategy, structure and process to deliver export opportunities, along with knowledge of supply chain and exposure to offshore markets will support your success in this role. The successful candidate will be working on an exciting project in which the outcome will deliver an informed industry that is aware, engaged and prepared for export.

The Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Offer technical services and support to growers and packers, including market access and protocol improvement services
  • Complete systematic export market and Country analysis i.e Market Intelligence
  • Keep abreast of changes within the industry and Government to ensure the smooth and effective delivery of the Apple and Pear Export Readiness and Market Access project
  • Build and maintain industry relationships including apple and pear growers and packers, APAL members, industry bodies and domestic and foreign agencies
  • Represent APAL and the apple and pear industry nationally and internationally at trade shows and government/industry export advisory groups

Skills and Experience required:

  • Demonstrated experience in establishing successful exports - agriculture experience is highly desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrated experience in supply chain
  • Strong stakeholder management skills to build constructive and effective relationships at all levels
  • Bachelor or Technical Degree in a relevant field is preferable
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • Demonstrated experience across project and budget management
  • Self-motivated, well organised with a high sense of accountability
