A career at Arup offers you the chance to make a positive difference in the world. Independently owned and independently minded, we attract a diverse mix of people to work on ground breaking projects around the world.

Arup is the creative force at the heart of many of the world’s most prominent projects in the built environment. We offer a broad range of professional services that combine to make a real difference to our clients and the communities in which we work.

We are truly global, and our 13,000 planners, designers, engineers and consultants around the world deliver innovative projects with creativity and passion.

Arup’s Australasian Planning Business offers an integrated suite of planning related services in three key project areas:

  • place making;
  • infrastructure planning; and
  • major events planning.

We are seeking enthusiastic candidates who are interested in creating excellent places and effective transport networks to join our successful planning team in Perth.  Our practice is involved in development, strategy and infrastructure projects for public and private sector clients. These include high profile projects such as METRONET, New Perth Stadium, Perth airport expansion and Greater Curtin activity centre.

The Role:

We are looking for a new team member with skills in transport engineering and development planning, particularly transport assessments, designing for highway, parking, walking and cycling schemes, junction and network capacity modelling and influencing travel behaviour.

Our projects require a broad range of skills and the ability to deliver quality work within a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment. Candidates should enjoy taking project responsibility and be keen to broaden their technical skills to support growth within the practice and their own career development.

You will be expected to lead and take responsibility for projects including the resource management and commercial performance of projects.  You will provide project management and technical support on a variety of projects which may include individual site developments, development master plans and significant transport infrastructure schemes.

You will need to use your transport planning and other skills to develop design proposals, analyse options, develop implementation strategies and assess benefits and impacts.

You will work with and manage work that involves the use of traffic modelling packages, in particular micro simulation to assess scheme proposals.

You will need to be familiar with the wider development planning process so that you can advise our clients in supporting development applications and consents.  You will have experience in planning and designing for all transport modes, interchange activity and the creation of public realm areas.

You will be working as part of one or more project teams led by a project director or manager, and we will expect you to manage projects. You will also need to be able to work collaboratively with wider multi-disciplinary design and planning teams.

Strong oral and written communication skills are essential as you will be involved in preparing technical reports and advice notes and attending meetings. You may also be involved in the preparation of commercial bids.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about transport, its wider role and the contribution it can make to shaping the future.

Good interpersonal skills are important and you must be able to work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues who have a range of backgrounds and experience. You will also be willing to learn new skills and committed to developing your own career and supporting junior colleagues in their own development.

Qualifications:

  • University degree/Diploma in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil engineering, geography, economics, mathematics).
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution. e.g. AITPM, Engineers Australia CIHT, CILT)

Essential:

  • Roughly 10-15 years’ experience in transport planning, engineering and modelling for developments and transport infrastructure schemes.
  • 5 -10 years’ experience in project management and client facing roles
  • Experience of engagement with local government authorities, developers and the public
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience of transport engineering, including highway design for strategic and local roads, public transport, walking and cycling schemes, particularly at the planning stage.

  • Proficient knowledge of DoP, DoT, PTA and MainRoads assessment and modelling guidance.
  • Knowledge of travel planning techniques including measures to encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport.
  • Experience of developing bus-based solutions, including service planning, the design of bus facilities.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary professional teams including architects, planning and engineering advisors.
  • Excellent report writing, oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • Masters degree in relevant discipline (e.g. transport planning).
  • Previous experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Understanding and preferably experience of planning for autonomous vehicles and future transport in general (e.g. MaaS).
  • Experience in managing projects with a substantial spatial and digital element which apply data science techniques and internet scale software processing and visualization to enhance end user experience and optimise asset performance across the built environment.
