Overview
Shoalhaven City Council have two (2) fixed term (maternity relief) positions available within their Strategic Planning Section. The positions require individuals with relevant tertiary qualifications that would provide eligibility for corporate membership with the Planning Institute of Australia. Strong organisational skills are necessary, in addition to possessing experience and knowledge in the interpretation and application of relevant environmental planning legislation.
Your New Role
Reporting directly to the Team Coordinator – Policy Planning the focus of this position is to:
- Undertake strategic planning functions under the mentorship of the Team Coordinator including preparation of planning proposals, development control plan and contributions plan amendments, and input into the preparation and review of strategic land use plans and policies.
- Provision of planning advice to internal and external customers.
- Assist the Team Coordinator in the deliver of the objectives outlined in the Group (Business) Plan.
- Assist the public and other stakeholders with strategic planning enquiries.
The advertised salary includes a discretionary weekly market component which may be payable to candidates with exceptional skills, knowledge and experience.
About You
In order to be successful in the position, you will be/ possess:
- Completion (or near completion) of a recognised tertiary qualification in a field such as urban and regional or town planning (or related qualifications), providing eligibility for corporate membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant environmental planning legislation and ability to interpret relevant regulations, acts and legislation.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, including the preparation of concise reports and correspondence.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
- Effective time management and prioritisation skills with the ability to balance competing workloads and deliver within deadlines.
- Class C Driver’s Licence

- Please provide details of a large strategic planning project you have worked on. What were the challenges you faced? What would you have done differently if you were to have to opportunity to do it again?
- Have you experience in the consultation phase of a project? Describe a project you worked on, that required consultation with external stakeholder groups.
- Please outline a situation where you encountered a problem or issue, and what strategies you used to resolve the problem or issue.
