About this role
The Team Leader leads, directs and manages the day to day operations and services of the Forensic Division of the Mental Health Review Tribunal and proactively develops strategies, policies and processes to implement the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 and the Mental Health (Forensic Provisions) Act 1990 to enable the Tribunal to review the detention, care and treatment of forensic and other patients under these Acts.
                                                                                                            
Where you'll be working
The Mental Health Review Tribunal is a specialist quasi-judicial body constituted under the Mental Health Act 2007. It has a wide range of powers that enable it to conduct mental health inquiries, make and review orders, and to hear some appeals, about the treatment and care of people living with a mental illness.
 
The Forensic Division of the Tribunal reviews the cases of forensic patients:

  • who have been found not guilty by reason of mental illness;
  • who have been found unfit to be tried; or

who have been transferred from prison to hospital because of a mental illness.

 

The Tribunal is based on the grounds of the old Gladesville Hospital at Gladesville.  It has a President, two full time and eight part time Deputy Presidents, a Registrar, 30 staff and approximately one hundred and forty part time members. The Forensic Division has 8 staff managed by the team Leader.

What you'll be doing

  • Manage the day to day operations of the Division including: human resources requirements, case load and workflow, records management and technology requirements.
  • Lead and manage a range of systems to ensure government and legislative requirements are met and to ensure the effective operation of the Division and the Tribunal. This includes overseeing the schedule of the Division?s hearings, records management and the maintenance of victims? and other registers as required.
  • Prepare correspondence, advice, submissions and briefings to respond to enquiries and requests for information and advice in relation to mental health and related matters.
  • Advise the President, Deputy Presidents and Registrar of the Tribunal about legal, policy and case management issues and collaborate with them to address systemic issues and monitor Division and Tribunal performance and standards.
  • Develop policies, strategies and processes to enable the Division to make decisions and orders about patients which properly consider the risks to the patient and the community and undertake quality assurance for Tribunal decisions.
  • Develop relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders in the mental health and forensic systems to foster the principles and objectives of legislative requirements and represent the Tribunal as required in external forums.
     
     
Essential Requirements for this role:
  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience in law, management or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in a legal or judicial environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of mental health issues and NSW mental health legislation
