About the Environment & Waste Department

This department is part of our City Services Division, and is responsible for building a sustainable City through the facilitation, promotion and adoption of a proactive approach in the use of our natural resources.  The department also looks after the City's waste management program including the operation of our landfills, transfer stations and resource recovery centres.

The Sustainability and Environmental Planning Unit is responsible for developing and implementing a range of sustainable environment strategies and programs and partnering with stakeholders to ensure Geelong is an environmentally sustainable city. The Unit coordinates the implementation of Council’s Environment Management Strategy, Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy, Climate Change Adaption Strategy, Low Carbon Growth Plan and oversees Council’s environmental planning referrals.

About the role
This position will have input into land use and development strategic planning processes, respond to planning referrals and be involved with sustainable development community events. The incumbent will provide policy and technical advice on a range of sustainable design issues with a focus on achieving a sustainable built environment.  The incumbent will also work closely with Council staff, consultants, industry groups, developers and contractors to meet statutory planning requirements.

 

Key responsibilities

  1. Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
  2. Assess and provide advice on strategic planning projects and statutory planning development proposals in relation to the built environment and sustainable design.
  3. Undertake site inspections of development applications and ensure compliance with required planning provisions and relevant planning permit conditions.
  4. Provide pre-application advice on best practice sustainable design.
  5. Provide staff training in relation to Ecological Sustainable Design and environmental legislation.
  6. Support the implementation of Council’s Sustainable Building Policy and new Greenstar building inductions and staff training.
  7. Proactively deliver communication and promotional materials.
  8. Attend and present at internal working group meetings and regional network meetings.

Key selection criteria

  1. Tertiary qualifications and experience in the following disciplines; sustainability, ecological sustainable design and/or planning.
  2. Sound knowledge of the Victorian Planning System within local government context and understanding of sustainable development rating systems.
  3. Experience in undertaking site assessments to ensure development applications meet planning permit requirements and/or legislative requirements.
  4. Ability to work effectively with a large range of internal and external stakeholders.
  5. Proven high level analytical and conceptual skills and ability to resolve complex problems.
  6. Contemporary knowledge of ecological sustainable development and industry trends and associated issues.
