The Team: 

The Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch consists of a team of 10 economists under the newly appointed Chief Economist. The team is responsible for providing advice on current and prospective economic conditions to inform budget fiscal estimates and policy advice. The team also supports advice on the long-term fiscal implications of macroeconomic trends and policy decisions.

The Role: 

As Director of the Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch you will lead a team of 10 economists and report to the NSW Treasury Chief Economist. You will lead the day-to-day activities of the branch ensuring that resources and systems are in place to meet your key deliverables. These include high quality advice and analysis to support Government decision making, which is underpinned by a comprehensive program of quantitative research and data analysis undertaken by your team. 

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Direct the preparation of regular macroeconomic forecasts to inform revenue and expenditure forecasts.
  • Provide of high quality, timely advice and analysis on macroeconomic developments for the Treasurer, Treasury Executive and other stakeholders.
  • Assess the impact of longer-term trends (including demographic ageing) on aggregate government spending, the structure of State finances and the NSW economy.
  • Drive a process of continuous improvement in forecasting methods and modelling approaches.
  • Liaise regularly with a broad range of economic stakeholders to balance data driven analysis with qualitative assessment.
  • Support the Government?s policy priorities by planning and leading macroeconomic research in a broach range of areas, for example trends in NSW productivity, structural change, housing market trends, drivers of business investment, developments in the labour market and the fundamentals of economic growth.
  • Lead and motivate a team by determining operational priorities, managing performance and providing leadership and guidance to ensure staff have the knowledge, skills and support to achieve organisational objectives, maintain high standards of customer services and deliver quality outcomes.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills to manage, motivate and develop a highly skilled team of 10 economists and strategically manage your branch resources.
  • Strong experience in macroeconomic forecasting, modelling analysis and research.
  • The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and open channels of communication to facilitate liaison, consultation and engagement with a broad range of stakeholders including the Treasurer, the Treasury senior leadership, other NSW Government Agencies, Commonwealth and State Treasuries, the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the private sector.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and collaborative working. 
  • Advanced communication skills that allow you to clearly and simply convey technical and complex information in a form appropriate to the audience and purpose.
  • Tertiary qualifications (preferably post-graduate) in economics or other relevant disciplines.
