The Team:

The Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch and the Revenue Forecasting and Analysis Branch are responsible for economic and revenue forecasting, macroeconomic analysis, economic modelling and the assessment of long- term fiscal pressures. They operate within the Economic Forecasting Revenue Analysis Division, which provides high quality, data driven advice to Government on its economic and revenue outlook as well as macroeconomic and revenue trends. 

The Role: 

There are currently positions available in the Economic Forecasting and Modelling Branch and the Revenue Forecasting and Analysis Branch. As a Senior Economist in one of these teams, you will drive the delivery of high quality advice and analysis to support Government decision making. You will provide strategic advice on economic and revenue developments and prospects, lead the provision of quantitative research and oversee high quality analysis across a diverse range of policy areas. 

Key accountabilities:

  •  Provide high quality analysis and advice, with clear and defensible recommendations to senior management and the Treasurer on issues such as the economic and/or revenue outlook, Budget measures and Commonwealth funding.
  • Draw on a wide variety of data to develop robust and consistent economic and revenue forecasts.
  • Drive the development and implementation of research tools such as of forecasting techniques, data analysis and models to support this advice.
  • Provide expert policy analysis and advice that complies with best practice guidelines, integrates relevant input from sources internal and external to the Department, and considers the broader policy and operating environment.
  • Communicate effectively and with influence to build strong stakeholder relationships across the Department, NSW Government, the Commonwealth, other States and Territories as well as external bodies to represent NSW Treasury and advance NSW priorities.
  • Actively contribute to the development and achievement of the Division?s corporate plans and programs.
  • Motivate and develop other economists within your team, including providing mentoring, feedback and coaching.

Key Skills and Experience:

  •  Tertiary qualifications in Economics/Statistics/Public Policy or relevant experience.
  • Experience in providing policy advice and/or economic analysis in a data driven environment with a strong customer focus.
  • Strong analysis skills to support policy advice and/or economic and revenue forecasts.
  • Familiarity with software (e.g. Excel, Eviews, RStudio, STATA) used to analyse data and build models to support policy advice and forecasts.
  • Experience in analysing data and building models to support policy advice and forecasts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, balance priorities, meet tight deadlines and work collaboratively.
  • Highly developed communication skills that allow you to clearly convey technical and complex information and analysis in different ways (verbal, written and visual) appropriate to the audience and its purpose.
