GrainGrowers is an independent and technically resourced, grain farmer representative organisation with 17,500 members across Australia. GrainGrowers' vision is to develop and promote a more efficient, sustainable and profitable grains industry for all Australian grain farmers.

The role of the Policy Officer is to assist the development of GrainGrowers' policy initiatives by undertaking industry research and policy analysis, preparing project reports and contributing to grower representation and advocacy activities. Policy topics will include industry development, international trade and market access, supply chain and freight, telecommunications, workforce development, biotechnology and natural resource management.

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Consult, liaise and advise – keep abreast of issues and formal inquiries which may impact the grains sector and work with manager to provide relevant advice and strategy recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Research and analysis – undertake research and analysis on key issues impacting the grains industry and develop papers, briefings and reports to a high standard for consideration by manager and GrainGrowers' National Policy Group.
  • Develop policy– assist in the preparation of draft innovative policy solutions, utilising GrainGrowers' Policy Development Framework.
  • Inform members– prepare briefing materials on key policy areas and work with the Communications team to convey policy information to members in a timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Advocate– assist with the delivery of policy outcomes which promote the development of a more efficient, sustainable and profitable grains industry.
  • Represent the interests of Australian grain farmers in industry and government fora.

The right candidate will possess:

  • Tertiary Qualifications - graduate degree in agriculture, economics, or public policy related discipline.
  • Ideally at least 1 year of industry analysis, research or policy administration experience, although new graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively work in a small team and liaise with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • An understanding of, and experience working in, agriculture or the grains industry is highly desirable.
  • Natural interest in agribusiness and/or and grains industry.
  • Demonstrated success in the analysis and evaluation of policy and industries.
  • Understanding of and experience in policy development and implementation.
  • Strong research, analysis, critical thinking and reporting skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Sound organisational skills and the ability to manage a consistently high level of work across a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work with flexibility, entrepreneurship, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel domestically as and when required.
  • Good administrative skills, including solid experience in Microsoft Office.
