Major Shutdown Lead – Kwinana Refinery – 18 Months Fixed Term Contract

As part of the Kwinana Refinery’s shutdown strategy, a major site shutdown is completed every ~4 years.  As the Major Shutdown Lead, the role will be responsible for the planning, preparation, execution and close out of the 2019 major shutdown, nominally anticipated to be completed in October 2019.  Specifically, responsibilities will include:

• Leadership and implementation of a safety first culture as you build the shutdown team, then plan and execute the shutdown
• Recruit and lead the team responsible for planning and execution of the 2019 Major Shutdown
• Work collaboratively with other Refinery departments in planning and execution, including Capital Engineering, HR, HSE
• Provide routine feedback on progress to the site Leadership team
• Managing overall strategic direction and preparation of the Outage
• Developing a robust and harmonious Contractor client relationship, reinforcing a one team approach
• Providing management advice to contractor personnel
• Maintaining an effective production/maintenance/engineering interface
• Ensuring all events and actions are planned and executed safely, to BHP quality standards and in compliance to the schedule
• Developing a clear schedule for the planning and execution phase of the outage, and delivering on this schedule
• Implementing clear cost management processes to ensure that budget requirements are achieved
• Implementing clear processes for quality management to ensure the outage is executed with a focus on maintenance quality

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Demonstrated track record of completing large maintenance projects safely, on schedule and within budget. 
• Experience in managing large contractor groups. 
• Proven ability to prioritise effectively, understand the use of systems and routines to manage your workload and be aware of the ‘bigger picture’ in leading your team. 
• Strong leader, understanding the importance of not only leading your own team but also the importance of engaging and working with other teams to ensure that the shutdown can be effectively delivered.
• The Kwinana Refinery Major Shutdown will have a large statutory compliance scope, particularly with regards to pressure vessel inspections.  Previous experience in this area will be seen as advantageous.

Located 30 kilometres south of the Perth, the Nickel West Kwinana produces nickel briquettes and nickel powder.  While many employees live in Perth, Fremantle and Mandurah, the Kwinana region is a thriving coastal township with three public beaches, excellent schools, modern shopping facilities and a wide variety of housing options.  As part of our commitment to health and safety Nickel West Kwinana is a smoke free operation.

We are investing in a Nickel Sulphate plant to be built at our Kwinana refinery south of Perth. We believe there are significant competitive advantages for Nickel West to move downstream into the battery chemical business.
