The role: We are currently seeking seasonal firefighters of varying experiences, cultures and skills sets for the upcoming fire season. In this role you will have the opportunity to work within diverse teams on a variety of forest management activities, including wildfire suppression, weed control, signage and potentially hazard reduction burning.
In addition to emergency firefighting, Seasonal Staff may also undertake a variety of field based and manual works including:
- Fire readiness including on-call, standby and patrol
- Spraying weeds using chemical
- Cleaning out blocked road culverts using a shovel
- Roadside clearing using brush-hooks, pole saws and chainsaws
- Clearing fire trails of fallen trees using chainsaws
- Fencing maintenance and construction
- Sign construction and maintenance
- General maintenance around forest headquarters and picnic areas
- Hazard reduction burning and establishment burning in autumn/winter
- General field work in pine plantations and native forests
- Occasional heavy plant operation (if qualified)
The opportunity available is seasonal in nature and workloads will vary depending on bushfire conditions. You will be required to work extended hours/shift/days under physically testing conditions. Your key responsibilities will be for fire suppression and you will be required to form part of the organisations fire readiness strategy including being on our Fire Roster. At times you will be required to be on-call at home depending on the local fire danger.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Current drivers licence (minimum of Class C and truck drivers licence are desirable)
- Physical fitness (must be able to pass medical examination and various functional/fitness tests)
- Ability to work within a team
- A high regard for safety
· Desirable skills are national fire fighting competencies specifically for bush/forest firefighter or higher and recent bush/forest fire fighting experience or heavy plant operation experience. Truck licence (HR or MR), chainsaw qualifications, first aid and plant operation skills are also highly advantageous. The ability to respond to emergency calls and present for duty within 30 minutes of receiving the call is highly desirable.
· Bush fire fighting experience is not mandatory.
Medical Requirements: Successful applicants will be required to satisfactorily complete medical examinations, Drug and Alcohol screening, a Fitness Test (called the Task Based Assessment) and accreditation courses for fire fighting to commence and retain employment.
