The Apprenticeship

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, you will be mentored by qualified tradespeople over a four-year period to gain mechanical knowledge and skills within the mining industry. Your involvement within the maintenance team will include efficient and continuous operation of all assets on a 24 hour, 7-day open cut mine site. At the completion of the Apprenticeship, you will complete the Nationally Accredited qualification - Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology (AUR31216).

On a day to day basis, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Mechanical maintenance
  • Repairs
  • Servicing work
  • Re-fuelling of mobile and fixed plant machinery

Essential requirements

  • Current drivers licence or learner’s permit
  • Access to your own reliable transport to from site
  • Possess strong mathematical aptitude with a minimum of Year 10 completion
  • Comfortable working at heights and in a physically demanding environment
  • Demonstrate a genuine passion for your chosen trade
  • Take pride in the quality of your work
  • Be able to work independently, as well as contribute to a team
  • Be reliable for full-time working hours Monday to Friday
  • Be committed to completing and passing all practical and theory-based study requirements of your Apprenticeship

Applicants with a Certificate II level prevocational qualification in electrical, or related work experience (paid or volunteer), and who live within the local region will be highly regarded.

About Bengalla Mine

Bengalla has long been a part of the upper Hunter Valley and is committed to investing in the region through creating jobs and supporting the local community. It is a single pit, open cut mine using a dragline, truck and excavator method to keep the site operating 24 hours, seven days. As a busy and highly productive site, a range of practical skills are required to keep the mine operating safely and smoothly.

All Bengalla Apprentices undertake a six month Mining Skills Program at the Centre, in conjunction with Hunter TAFE, to develop valuable technical skills, including welding, electrical, automotive, and training in financial awareness, health and nutrition, personal fitness, communication skills and road safety awareness.
