GEMCO is one of the world's largest manganese mining and concentrating operations located on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, accounting for over 20% of the worlds' high-grade manganese ore production. GEMCO controls and operates all aspects of mining, processing, logistics and shipping on Groote Eylandt.

The Opportunity

South32 are seeking a strong leader for our Road Haulage and Port Operations Superintendent role at GEMCO.  Reporting to the Operations Manager, Process and Logistics, this role is responsible for the safe delivery of road train product haulage and Port stockpile and shipping operations in line with our GEMCO business plan.

Accountabilities

  • Work safely within the South 32 Care Strategy including establishing and maintaining an interdependent safety culture within the team including the delivery of improvements in safety performance
  • Actively coach and pursue opportunities to ensure front line leaders develop an inclusive operating culture where employees are empowered to speak up and contribute effectively every day
  • Ensure critical controls for fatal risk tasks are in place and effective at managing the risks associated with road transport, material handling and ship handling and loading operations
  • Working with key stakeholders to establish production and maintenance plans aligned with operational requirements and business outcomes
  • Maintain compliance to relevant road transport, maritime, security and Ports legislative obligations
  • Manage the Marine Pilotage contract, moisture management plan, tug operations and ship movements within the Port liaising effectively with marketing and freight scheduling stakeholders
  • Monitor and drive operational performance for production teams utilising effective methods to engage execution personal and frontline leadership in the achievement of goals and objectives
  • Ensuring optimal management of the department through the effective and efficient application of policies and procedures, business systems, human and financial resources.
  • Improve the technical and safety performance of the business unit through identification of opportunities, investigations and development of business cases and improvement plans
  • Define training requirements for the business unit and provide governance to the status of qualifications of Execution personnel

 About You 

  • a Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, either Logistics, Engineering or Business would be preferred.
  • Proven experience in a similar role i.e. significant time spent in a leadership role (managing front line teams). Ideally this would include relevant experience in Planning / Scheduling Production or Logistics processes.
  • Sound maritime / Port knowledge and experience gained working within an operational Port / shipping environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Relevant experience in contract and budgetary management
  • SAP experience (preferred)
