Our Minerals Australia Business includes operations in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, focusing on iron ore, copper, coal and nickel.

Our Health, Safety and Environment Function provides support across the entire organisation, with Safety being a critical element of the services provided. Reporting to our Head of Safety Analysis and Improvement (A&I), we are currently seeking a Principal Safety A&I Projects, based in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, to join the HSE team and support our different Projects Functional groups across Minerals Australia. You will be a key member in a team of dedicated safety professionals in this complex, diverse and rewarding setting.

About the role

Safety Analysis and Improvement across Minerals Australia is responsible for developing a framework that enables our businesses and the organisation to deliver excellent HSE performance.

This is a great opportunity to join the team as a Principal to provide input into the development and improvement of a safety framework that enables BHP to deliver on the Charter Value of Sustainability.

 

In this role you will:

  • Create Asset-wide HSE standards and facilitate the design and establishment of Asset and Australia wide HSE procedures and systems.

  • Facilitate workshops and project manage asset and group wide projects across the Function.

  • Support the provision of advice to the Minerals Australia Leadership Team (MAULT) on safety matters, global practices and emerging trends.
  • Support the development of Asset -level strategies and improvement initiatives for material safety issues.
  • Monitor performance, analyse data and define improvements to HSE systems, structures and processes against our Group Level Documents and our legal obligations.

  • Provide HSE expertise to line management on risks with HSE impacts and key regulatory requirements

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting as per legislative requirements, including effective document control and retention of records.

  • Share Asset-level safety issues, global practices, emerging trends, achievements and improvement opportunities across the BHP Group.
  • Support the development of the safety component of the Asset’s HSE strategic five year plan.
  • Represent BHP on key industry bodies and associations.

About you

You will have substantial safety operational experience, preferably in the mining, oil and gas or similar industry.  Experience in supporting major capital projects will be advantageous. You have also demonstrated success as a leader in the delivery of safety outcomes as a functional specialist through diverse teams across multiple geographies, operations / projects and jurisdictions.

 

You have strong project management skills (preferably trained in Six Sigma) and expertise in safety processes, systems and performance measures and have proven contribution in delivering safety improvement initiatives and mastery of relevant tools for safety excellence (e.g. Risk Management). Your technical strengths and exceptional content knowledge will be complemented by your excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

 

This is a challenging role and will require an experienced person, and while not essential, tertiary qualifications in Safety or a related field would be well regarded.
