Introduction

CRU’s Sydney team is seeking a talented and motivated individual to maintain and continue our research of the thermal and metallurgical coal markets.  Specifically, this involves assisting in the production of the Thermal Coal Market Outlook, which is produced quarterly.  This will involve taking ownership of CRU’s primary energy model, forecasting supply and providing written content for the report as well as special features and insights on the industry.  The role will also include providing monthly price and sector updates, as well as potentially assisting with the development of a Thermal Coal Long Term Market Outlook, produced annually.  It will also involve working with CRU’s wider coal analysis team, including assisting in the production of the Metallurgical Coal Market Outlook, Metallurgical Coal Long Term Market Outlook and Thermal and Metallurgical Coal Cost Models as required.

For the right person, this position will deliver external client engagement, growth in industry profile and provide the opportunity to become part of a dynamic, supportive and truly international team.

This position is expected to be filled in Australia.  However, applications for those wishing to work in CRU’s London or Singapore offices will also be accepted.

Job specification:

Main responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the production of CRU’s Thermal Coal Market Outlook to:
    • ensure the timely delivery of excellent quality reports.
    • initiate and deliver enhancements to these products, within the Coal and Steel Team product development framework.
    • develop/maintain outstanding relationships with market participants.
    • analyse and interpret the latest data relating to production, trade, consumption and inventories.
    • forecast consumption, trade, production and prices.
    • deliver expert quality data and expertly present our analysis in written form, graphically and verbally in both formal and informal settings.
  • To contribute to CRU’s other coal analysis products as and when required.
  • To maintain and develop a structured approach to data collection, storage and analysis.
  • To ensure consistency in our data, our forecasting methodologies, and our approach to analysis.
  • To actively participate in the future enhancement of the Thermal Coal Platform and models.
  • To actively participate in the development and improvement of our thermal coal market analysis.
  • To work closely with sales and marketing in order to maximise sales of our analytical products.

    Key requisites:

  • Proven depth of knowledge in your existing work area.
  • Proven analytical skills (i.e. ability to critically analyse data and identify trends and key drivers).
  • The ability to construct and articulate a well reasoned and logical argument, evidenced by supporting data and with clearly articulated assumptions.
  • First class communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • An ability to individually work to strict deadlines and also to deliver products, which include contributions from several analysts.
  • Commercial awareness, demonstrated by a keen awareness of the current performance of your product(s) and proven ability to spot an opportunity.
  • A determination to succeed and a “can do” attitude.
  • A team, business unit and company player.
