Program Director: Mine to Metal Business Unit (M2M BU)

Position: Full time. Perth or Melbourne base preferred. 

Primary focus: Provide leadership, and develop high-value collaborative projects and growth opportunities for the M2M BU specifically, and for AMIRA generally, by:

  • Being part of the Senior Management Team (approx 10%),
  • Managing the M2M team (comprising of four Program Managers based in Chile, US, South Africa and Australia) and the project portfolio incorporating existing projects and new projects under development (approx 30%), and
  • Identifying, developing, and managing collaborative projects, the results of which will deliver value to sponsors and provide revenue for AMIRA (approx. 60%).

Challenges of the position: Be part of AMIRA's change process focusing on deepening member engagement, delivering on members' expectations, and enhancing AMIRA's value proposition. Creating new business opportunities, and developing high value projects that will generate revenue in the short term, are key challenges.  

Nature of key relationships:

  • Reporting to the Managing Director
  • Preparing reports to the Board on M2M BU and relevant strategic activities and stakeholder engagement.
  • Managing Program Managers responsible for projects that fall in the purview of the M2M BU. 
  • Working closely with the Program Director – Exploration to Mine & Sustainability, and the Global Business Development Manager
  • Engaging with both C-suite and technical representatives of Members
  • Engaging with Solution providers from research institutions and other relevant organisations
  • Engaging with Government agencies, political leaders and their advisers

Major Responsibility Areas / Accountabilities

i.     Senior Management Team

  • Prepare relevant information for the AMIRA Board on M2M BU activities, including matters relating to Strategic Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement.
  • Work with the Senior Management Team and other Program Managers to develop and prioritise project ideas across the value chain.
  • Contribute to the deliberations of the Senior Management Team in the development and implementation of strategy and ensure engagement of the broader organisation.
  • Identify and prepare value propositions for new products and services as well as new revenue sources that AMIRA should consider.
  • Contribute and help improve AMIRA's business processes, planning and budgeting activities.
  • Have high level oversight of the whole range of AMIRA's product offerings and projects.
  • Work to attract new members.

ii.    Manage the M2M BU

  • Develop and implement a growth strategy for the M2M BU.
  • Ensure that collaboration is at the heart  of the team's work ethic; develop the team's and individual KPIs.
  • Have oversight of all M2M projects being developed, or that are under management.

iii.  Secure industry funding for high-value collaborative projects

  • Identify key challenges in the minerals industry that will lead to project ideas.  
  • Work with relevant industry champions, and appropriate solution providers, to prepare best practice project proposals.
  • Prepare marketing plans and test project ideas with members.  
  • Collaborate with Program Managers, as necessary, to assist in the marketing of their proposals, to successfully secure sponsorship of projects in a timely manner.
  • Prepare research agreements.

iv.  Manage projects to successful completion

v.   Stakeholder engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with appropriate decision-makers and influencers, including C-suite personnel, in member companies.
  • Serve as the key member contact, including planning and tracking membership engagement by all team members relating to the M2M BU  
  • Promote the "value proposition" of AMIRA to all stakeholders.
  • Attract new members and manage membership retention
  • Build and maintain a network of influence across the global research community, relevant to the M2M BU.
  • Ensure that team members keep accurate and timely member contact records and intelligence, using internal CRM tools

Key Selection Criteria:

1. A minimum of ten years practical experience in mining, mineral processing and/or extractive metallurgy.

2.  Experience in business development and/or marketing, focusing on the mining industry.

3. A go-getter, confident, results oriented person with a passion for solving problems through collaboration. 

4. Demonstrable ability to engage and communicate effectively with C-suite, Senior Technical Managers and Operators, to promote AMIRA.

5. Ability to be proactive in seeking to identify and understand industry's challenges and in designing projects with appropriate solution providers, to deliver implementable and impactful solutions. 

6. Ability to develop value propositions, including estimating ROI of project outcomes if implemented, market/sell projects including those that may focus on areas that the candidate may not have domain knowledge in.

7. Have a wide and deep mining industry network.

8. Ability to provide effective and inclusive leadership through supervision and development of the individuals and the team of the M2M BU.

9. Demonstrable facilitation skills of diverse groups.   

10. Demonstrable commitment to collaboration and innovation.

11. Willingness to travel.
