Overview
We are seeking a principal level engineer to ensure that underground geotechnical risks across the Newcrest Group are known and managed to an industry leading standard. This person will act as a change agent, not a maintainer, and will improve geotechnical systems and processes to reduce site risk.
Reporting directly to the Head of Mining your duties will include:
- Acting as the corporate owner of geotechnical design and execution standards, guidelines, procedures, and work method statements;
- Overseeing geotechnical safety and risk management, including the establishment of critical controls for material risks;
- Defining performance metrics, benchmarks, and leading practices in the geotechnical field, and helping Newcrest sites create strategies to close gaps;
- Helping identify geotechnical technology advancements, and taking a lead role to operationalise / implement value adding initiatives;
- Managing geotechnical modelling to enable Newcrest to make informed decisions from accurate data; and
- Developing the capability of Geotechnical teams across the Newcrest Group through coaching and mentoring.
This is a permanent position located at our corporate headquarters in Melbourne.

About You
Our ideal candidate will be a tertiary qualified engineer with significant onsite underground geotechnical design, planning, and operational experience.
Other requirements include:
- Demonstrated experience with a variety of underground mining methods, including techniques such as narrow vein mining, open stoping, and cave mining;
- Expertise with underground geotechnical structural and numerical models; and
- An extensive professional network covering peers, academics, and industry service providers.
