An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated professional to join our policy team initially on a 12 month maternity leave contract, but with the option of a permanent Policy Director role.

The NSW Minerals Council (NSWMC) is the industry association representing mining in NSW.  

This role has responsibility for:

  • Analysing the planning and environmental regulatory framework for the minerals industry, developing industry policy with member companies, preparing submissions and advocacy.

  • Supporting industry working groups and committees, including the preparation of high quality agendas and briefing papers.

  • Establishing effective relationships with contacts within government, industry, and community groups.

  • Developing effective communication on policy issues impacting the industry.

Ideally, candidates will have the following education, skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in environmental science; resource management; geology; law; or planning.

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in public policy, government relations, environmental management and/or major project approval processes.

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to develop positions taking into consideration a range of competing views to deliver on strategic objectives.

  • Understanding of the processes of government.

  • Knowledge of the environmental and community issues facing the NSW mining industry.

  • Knowledge of the NSW and Commonwealth environmental approvals legislation.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage and work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.

The position Policy Director reports to the CEO and has one direct report, Policy Manager.  The position is based in our Sydney office and is full time, however part time and/or flexible arrangements will be considered.
