TransAlta operates and maintains 6 Gas Turbine Power Stations in Western Australia. With a 20-year history in the State, we provide safe, clean and reliable power to large mining and industrial customers and have invested significantly in stable, long-term contracts.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced commercial-focused Commercial Specialist to join our team.

The Commercial Specialist supports the functional management of day-to-day and project activities for one or more business units. Working closely with the Commercial Manager, Commercial and Site Managers, the Senior Commercial Specialist provides support on a range of commercial matters, including contract management, identifying and implementing solutions in response to customer’s requests, driving forward initiatives to improve efficiencies within the business and assisting or leading negotiations with outside parties.

The  Commercial Specialist will work with the business in managing one or more key commercial relationships for the Australian business. The commercial scope of the role would not suit candidates with supply chain backgrounds.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Proposing, developing, implementing, and reviewing annual business plans/budgets and delivering the agreed outcomes.
  • Identify and deliver initiatives to create better efficiencies within the commercial team and the wider business.
  • Managing key commercial contracts (Power Purchase Agreements) and customer relationships associated those contracts, collection of appropriate revenues, or payment of funds.
  • Identifying and mitigating key risks associated with in area of accountability.
  • Representing TransAlta’s commercial interests on operating and other committees, on decisions relating to performance targets, budgeting, medium range forecasts and investment options within areas of responsibility.
  • Ensuring contractual obligations are understood and complied with by TransAlta personnel and partners and supported by internal service providers and suppliers.
  • optimizing commercial outcomes and adding growth opportunities within areas of responsibility.
  • Contributing to market bidding activities.

To be considered for this role you will need demonstrate:

  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or similar background
  • 5+ years post qualification experience in a technical or commercial role, preferably in the resources or energy industry
  • Understanding of commercial contracts
  • Experience in contractual management and relationship building
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Delivery of results to meet performance targets
  • An outcomes focused attitude and personal accountability
  • Highly developed analytical skills and strong technical skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build excellent internal and external relationships
  • Knowledge and the ability to implement business improvement methodologies.
