As a participant of the 12 week Whitehaven Coal Summer Vacation Student Program you will gain exposure to either underground or open cut mining and will work in teams that will assist your continual learning and growth within a supportive environment.  

We will have opportunities for students to work within our underground or open cut operations working across a variety of our business divisions.

The main responsibilities of a Whitehaven Vacation Student is to:

• support and actively participate as a member of your respective team
• develop a working knowledge of open cut or underground coal mining
• contribute to projects and day-to-day duties and tasks
• develop, implement and manage projects as required

We are looking for Students with Engineering degrees including Mining, Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical/Process/Metallurgical, Geotechnical or Environmental as well as Students with degrees in Environmental Science, Geology, Surveying and Workplace Health & Safety.  We look for Students who are passionate, motivated and adaptable with a keen interest in learning new skills and stepping out of their comfort zones. Whitehaven will provide you with many opportunities for personal and career development through challenging work, mentoring opportunities, a supportive management team and a structured learning environment.

• Paid work experience for the duration of your placement
• Free accommodation and all meals provided at the Boggabri Civeo camp.
• Vacation Students typically have 2 weeks unpaid leave over the Christmas period.

Who are we looking for?

• Students currently studying a relevant Tertiary degree
• Students who have a passion to learn about the mining industry
• Students with a keen interest in learning new skills and stepping out of their comfort zones
• We employ Vacation Students from first year to final year of either an undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree.

• June                              Applications open for Vacation Program commencing in November/December 2018
• August                           Applications close
• Early September             Applications reviewed, interviews held & candidates advised of next steps
• Late September              Pre-Employment Medicals and Offers made
• November/December      Students commence
