About the Office of the Chief Executive
The Office of the CEO is responsible for the strategic direction of the City of Greater Geelong, ensuring the City operates as efficiently and effectively as possible.

About the role

The Advisor – Mayor and CEO is responsible for facilitating good communication between the Mayor and the City, providing advice, support and guidance across a range of civic and governance matters to ensure that the Mayor and CEO can effectively fulfil their civic duties.

 

Key responsibilities

  1. Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
  2. Assist with issues management across the organisation in accordance with the management policy and procedure.
  3. Identify, research and analyse information relating to current issues in local government and the Greater Geelong area, and current priorities and projects of the CEO.
  4. Monitor and develop appropriate government relations strategies to enhance opportunities for the City.
  5. Assist in strategic narrative and advice to the CEO on political matters in accordance with Council objectives.
  6. Ensure effective coordination of communication, information and advice as between the Mayor and the CEO.
  7. Provide end-to-end assistance to any event attended by the Mayor, including attending as required to provide the required support.
  8. Ability to work flexibly to meet the operational needs of the Mayor and the organisation, including work outside of normal business hours.

Key selection criteria

  1. Ability to quickly develop detailed knowledge of, the City’s structures, administrative mechanisms, governance protocols, and business procedures.
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to positively liaise and negotiate with a range of internal and external stakeholders at the highest level.
  3. The ability to operate effectively, efficiently and flexibly with experience in managing competing priorities and multiple workflows.
  4. Ability to identify and provide advice on strategic issues.
  5. Demonstrated ability to deliver successful outcomes in a timely and consistent manner.
  6. Experience in providing quality assurance for a range of formal communications including correspondence, briefings, speeches, media releases, submissions and reports.
  7. Experience in working in a politically sensitive and/or confidential environment.
