We are seeking applications from experienced Service Engineer/Technician to join our team in Preston. Reporting to the Fleet Manager the successful candidate will responsible in assisting the Senior Service Technician for the performance of routine preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, vehicle recovery, on-call support and training of the Operator’s maintenance personnel.  This role will also to assist in the revision of manuals, systems, standards, maintenance regimes and technical solutions to improve the performance and reliability of the vehicles and supporting Product Introduction onsite with commissioning of newly delivered vehicles.

Your key responsibilities will include the following:

  • Preform fault diagnosis and identification on both the electrical and mechanical systems of the vehicle.
  • Assist in the identification and production of vehicle modification programs to improve reliability and maintainability.
  • Assist / Perform vehicle modifications as required.
  • Establish, maintain and deliver training material in line with maintenance needs and ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Day to day field service support to ensure vehicle is operating safely and in accordance with contract performance requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the customer during warranty period.
  • Provide training in the operation and maintenance of the product.
  • Perform Static and Dynamic testing, continuity and insulation testing, system functionality testing of equipment on vehicles.
  • Assist in the development, verification and application/introduction of vehicle related standards that would be relevant and applicable for specific types of rail vehicles.
  • Perform cost benefit and risk analysis for proposed solutions to assess their viability within the constraints of the contract and budget.
  • Produce proposals on relevant and cost-effective options for vehicle changes/modifications accompanied by the appropriate documentation such as risk analysis etc.
  • Provide monthly reports to management on vehicle related issues, performance and improvement initiatives.

It is expected you will have the following qualifications, experience and personal characteristics:

  • Relevant trade certificate or tertiary qualified engineer (preferably mechatronics, electrical, or electronics discipline) or previous experience as service technician in vehicle maintenance, modifications, and reliability growth management desirable.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a Rolling Stock Fleet Operational environment preferred.
  • Able to use IT systems i.e. Maximo for data recording and management.
  • Previous experience in vehicle maintenance work.
  • A strong level of fault finding and troubleshooting experience in structural, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Some experience and understanding of the interface between electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment on rail vehicles.
  • Experience in negotiating with customers and suppliers.
  • Be able to read and understand engineering and schematic drawings, sketches etc.
  • Rail / tramway specific background preferable but not essential.
