Research Area: Animal Health Genomics
Eligibility: PhD in a relevant discipline with up to 3 years’ (max.) relevant experience.
The combined total of this contract combined with any other PD1 contracts must not exceed 3 years in total.
Post Duration: 36 months
Location: Teagasc Animal and Bioscience Department, Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Grange, Dunsany, Co. Meath.
Training Rate: Appointment will be at the minimum point of the Post Doctoral Level 1 (PD1) scale (€34,975).
The current PD1 scale is as follows:
PD1: €34,975 (min.); €35,974; €37,003 (max.)
Increments will be awarded annually* subject to performance and completion of the prescribed training plan.
Basic Function of the post:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the tissue collection and molecular analyses relating to the identification of DNA based biomarkers in regulatory regions of the genome for susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease complex.
Specific tasks include:
- Collect tissues (Apical lung lobe and mediastinal lymph node) from a BoHV-1 and BRSV disease challenge model, for transcriptomic, ATAC-seq and FAIRE-seq analyses.
- Perform RNAseq, ATAC-seq and FAIRE-seq analysis (following a period of training at the University of Missouri, USA).
- Perform complementary bioinformatic analyses.
- Discover genetic variants in regulatory regions of genes involved in BRD resistance and perform association studies.
Duties will include: laboratory based genomics analysis, biological assays, genotyping and association studies, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, scientific reporting, manuscript writing and liaising with research staff.
The successful candidate will also be involved with dissemination of results of the project to the various stakeholders involved.

Person Specification
Essential
- PhD in (Molecular Biology and/or Animal Science).
- Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.
Desirable
- Knowledge of bovine genetics/genomics and bioinformatics.
- Experience of organising and conducting animal-based research projects.
