The Nuffield Department of Medicine is recruiting for a Head of Human Resources for a period of 1 year, to cover maternity leave. 

The Head of HR will provide strategic and operational direction for the full range of people-related issues and decisions in order to drive forward and strengthen HR management within NDM. You will ensure high levels of engagement throughout the Department and develop strong working relationships with Business Managers/ Administrators and HR staff, to ensure University HR policies are implemented consistently. You will also develop strong working relationships with other departments across the University, including Personnel Services.

You will be the first point of contact for all HR queries from HR staff and Business Managers and will provide HR advice and support on complex people management issues.

You will define and support the HR change management agenda within NDM to support the academic aims of the Department, and act as an ambassador on HR initiatives; this will involve the review, identification and implementation of improvements to transactional systems and processes, making maximum use of information technology to streamline processes, ensuring systems operate effectively.

You will have functional management responsibility for all NDM HR staff (currently 14), the Athena SWAN Coordinator and for Trainee Unit Administrators during periods of secondment to HR positions. 

You will hold a master’s degree in Human Resource Management and be a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD. You will have demonstrable and significant previous experience as a senior HR manager, either in the HE sector or in another large and complex organisation, with an in-depth working knowledge of UK employment law, and the ability to understand and interpret policy.

A significant track record of managing complex employee relations issues and experience or an understanding of the challenges of working with units which are geographically dispersed and with subsidiary companies is essential. You will have a track record of managing large scale change and have excellent interpersonal, advocacy, persuasion and influencing skills, with the ability to confidently present to a wide range of audiences. As an experienced leader, you will have the ability to lead and motivate HR teams.

Consideration will be given to applicants who do not fulfil all of the criteria for a Grade 9 appointment. A reduction in duties and criteria for a Grade 8 appointment (£39,324 - £46,924 p.a) are detailed in the job description.

This is a fixed-term appointment for 1 year to cover maternity leave.
