‘The Business of Women's Words: Purpose and Profit in Feminist Publishing’

The School of Media Film and Music is pleased to offer two 3 year, full-time Research Fellowships to work on this projectFunded by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Library, work will be supervised by Dr Margaretta Jolly (project PI) and Dr Lucy Delap at the University of Cambridge (project CI).

The project will be based in the School of Media, Film and Music in collaboration with the Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research (directed by Dr Jolly). The School is a well-established and internationally respected centre for research and teaching in a wide range of media, communication and cultural studies, and provides a stimulating and supportive environment.

The fellowships will contribute to the project’s aim to establish the history of feminist entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative industries. The project will achieve this through writing and mapping the histories of the feminist magazine Spare Rib and the publisher Virago Books Ltd in relationship to each other and in the context of other feminist cultural and creative publishing initiatives since the 1970s.

Working for this project will require familiarity with publishing history, cultural and creative industry perspectives and/or ethical business, feminist/women’s social movements, twentieth century UK political, social and cultural history, and experience of research in written and oral history archives. Some travel within the UK will be involved including attending meetings at the University of Cambridge, but most research will be conducted in either London or at the University of Sussex.

You will have a PhD related to the research project (i.e. publishing history, cultural and creative industry perspectives and/or ethical business, feminist/women’s social movements, twentieth century UK political, social and cultural history) and will take responsibility for identified parts of the project, offering support to all research activities. You must be digitally literate, have archival experience, and be able to demonstrate a developing record of research.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone with academic interests in this area. The roles offer direct engagement in high quality, international research and networks within the UK and beyond.

More information can be obtained informally from Dr Margaretta Jolly [email protected]
