Detail information about job PhD studentship in Mechanical Properties of Ceramic Composites. Terms and conditions vacancy

Supervisors: Dr Finn Giuliani, Dr Ben Britton & Professor Eduardo Saiz

Duration: 42 months

We are seeking applications from enthusiastic graduates for a three and half year PhD studentship to develop novel mechanical testing techniques to understand the fracture behavior of metal ceramic composites. The project will be based in the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (www3.imperial.ac.uk/structuralceramics) and the Department of Materials at Imperial College London.

Metal-ceramic composites find uses in a number of demanding applications, particularly where both high temperatures are encountered and excellent mechanical properties are required. Being a composite comprised of very dissimilar materials there huge opportunities to tune the microstructure of these materials. However, understanding the precise effect of any microstructural changes on the mechanical properties can be very difficult.

Therefore, this project will focus first on developing an in situ stable fracture test for the scanning electron microscope so that the effect of microstructure on crack paths can be directly observed and measured. The project will then to move to optimizing the composite microstructure to produce high performance components. This project is partially industrially sponsored.

You will work within a team of dynamic PhD Students and Research Associates, in newly refurbished laboratories on the South Kensington Campus. You will also have extensive interaction with several international collaborators, as well as project partners. You will have access to advanced characterization facilities within the department.

We are seeking UK candidates with a minimum 2:1 (or equivalent) first degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or Applied Physics. This 42 months studentship will begin in late 2017 and will cover fees at the home/EU rate plus the standard maintenance stipend of £15,553 per annum. Applications will be processed as received.

The project will be supervised Professor Eduardo Saiz, Dr Ben Britton and Dr Finn Giuliani, and informal enquiries should be sent to Dr Finn Giuliani with two pages CV prior to formal application, [email protected].

For questions regarding the admissions process, please contact Fiona Thomson ([email protected]).
