Full-time Fixed-term from 1 November 2017 (or as soon as possible) to 30 April 2020
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant on a prestigious research project funded by the Nordforsk consortium as part of their Nordic Society Security Programme (https://www.nordforsk.org/en/programmes-and-projects/programmes/samfunnssikkerhet). ‘Taking Surveillance Apart?: Accountability and Legitimacy of Internet Surveillance and Expanded Investigatory Powers’ is led by Dr Megan O'Neill from the University of Dundee, Scotland. UK project members come from the University of Dundee, The University of Edinburgh, St Andrews University and the University of Glasgow. Project members from the Nordic region include Uppsala University (Sweden), The Police University College of Finland and the Norwegian Police University College. The Research Assistant will be based at the University of Dundee and supervised by Dr Megan O’Neill.
Education / Qualifications
Essential: PhD in a social science, or near submission of PhD
Desirable: Master’s degree in Social Research Methods in addition to PhD in a relevant subject area
Work Experience
Essential: Experience of conducting qualitative research, experience of qualitative data analysis, a working understanding of questionnaire design and analysis, experience of literature review and analysis
Desirable: Experience of mixed-methods research (such as Q methodology); experience of quantitative data analysis; experience of researching the police, policing, surveillance, legal analysis or online research methods; project report writing experience; experience of web site maintenance and social media; project management experience
Personal Qualities and Abilities
Essential: Ability to conduct independent research, ability to work well in a team, excellent communication skills, excellent time management skills
Knowledge of appropriate IT applications (such as Microsoft Office and data analysis software packages such as NVivo)
Ability to work with a diverse range of people, ability to travel to research sites in the UK and abroad with overnight stays, availability to attend meetings in the UK and abroad, with overnight stays
Desirable: Driver’s licence and own car

If the successful candidate does not have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area, appointment will be made to Training Grade 7 (£28,098 - £30,688).
