Detail information about job PhD Studentship: Advanced Composite Structures And Metamaterials (in collaboration with a major aerospace industry). Terms and conditions vacancy

The University of Nottingham is a world leader in aerospace R&D. With a research income which exceeds £120M per Year, the Engineering Research Power of the University currently ranks 4th in the UK. The Faculty of Engineering is ranked in the top 5 out of 85 engineering departments in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise, with most of its research output classified as world leading or internationally excellent in quality. It provides state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities and attracts leading scholars from around the world, many of whom are leaders in their fields.

Description of the post

The next generation of adaptive industrial composite structures and metamaterials will be designed to have unique dynamic and acoustic response properties, such as enhanced damping and vibrational isolation behaviour, improved control of the structural response and superior energy harvesting properties from the ambient vibration sources. The project will focus on modelling the behaviour of such advanced composites and determine the optimal design of the structure when subject to specified operating conditions.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (3 years) within the Composites Group and the Institute for Aerospace Technologies of the University of Nottingham. The project will be completed in collaboration with a major European aerospace company and the PhD candidate will have the opportunity to interact with leading industrial experts in the field.

The studentship includes fees and a tax-free stipend of £13,726 per annum. An additional £2000 a year may be awarded for students with a 1st class degree/MSc Distinction from a UK Russell Group University or equivalent. Please note that due to funding restrictions, current funding is available to UK/EU nationals only.

The PhD candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to the development of modelling tools and experimental verification related to the dynamic response and wave propagation properties of composite metamaterials. The successful applicant should:

  • be in possession of (or be expecting to obtain) a first-class or a 2:1 degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics or a relevant discipline and
  • have a sound background in numerical modelling and/or dynamics of solids.
  • Informal enquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to: [email protected]. If you are interested in applying for the post, please send a detailed CV to the above email.

The position will remain open until filled.
