About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC’s ISIS facility is a leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level.

About The Role

The aim of this research project is to facilitate the interpretation and understanding of inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering data by developing a new computer modelling method to model the dynamic structure factor, S(q,omega).

The project is a collaboration between Chalmers University, the European Spallation Source, ISIS Facility and the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. The work will mostly be performed at the ISIS facility, where the position will be based.

Within this role you will initially focus on developing a new modelling tool; where you will be working with experienced software professionals. Soon after the first version of the software package is completed, you will participate in neutron scattering experiments to validate the developed tool on measured data. You will also be responsible for documenting the software and writing scientific articles about the developed modelling tool.

As part of your work you will interact frequently with the ISIS scientists and will also be supported by the partners at Chalmers University, the European Spallation Source and the Niels Bohr Institute. The post will reside within the Scientific Computing section of the ISIS Computing Group.

About You

You will have a PhD in physics or physics related field. It is essential that you have experience in developing software in a scientific environment.

You must have experience of object oriented programming techniques and excellent English language skills.

You will have a professional approach, an analytical, logical and quick learning mind, a ‘can do’ attitude and be able to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow developers and scientists alike.

It is desirable that you have experience of performing MD simulations and experience of development in C++ and Python. Knowledge of neutron scattering theory and Fortran would also be very beneficial in this role.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages (http://www.stfccareers.co.uk).
