This post is available from 01 October 2017 for 36 months to support the work of Dr Francesca Palombo and Prof Nick Stone.

The project will integrate a Raman spectrometer into an existing Brillouin microscope for the multimodal microspectroscopy of biological tissues and will apply it to the studies of oesophageal cancer.

This Cancer Research UK funded post will include design, construction and day-to-day management of the instrument; tests using tissue phantoms; measurement of tissue biopsy sections and analysis of imaging datasets. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a PhD in Physics, or be nearing completion, have previous experience building / managing laser spectroscopy or microscopy setups, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established multidisciplinary research programmes. At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will have a high level of experience in development and design of spectroscopy and microscopy techniques and be able to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
