A position exists for a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher in the Department of Engineering, Cambridge University, to work on adjoint sensitivity analysis of thermoacoustics in annular combustors as part of ANNULIGHT (http://www.ntnu.edu/annulight). The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The project is to derive the adjoint equations of Helmholtz solvers with distributed heat release and acoustic impedance boundary conditions and validate with finite difference calculations, and to implement the adjoint equations in an existing 3D Helmholtz solver (AVSP).

The key responsibilities are to: work towards the project's objectives; present and publish research; manage own research and administrative activities; communicate technical material; liaise with colleagues; attend group meetings and training schools in Europe and attend secondments to partners.

Requirements: clear written and spoken English; background in Acoustics, Fluid Mechanics, or Numerical Analysis; experience in numerical methods and programming.

Candidates can be of any nationality. The candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Candidates must be in their first 4 years of their research career and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.  The 4 years are counted from the date a degree was obtained which formally entitles to embark on a doctorate. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related area.

The successful candidate will be expected to register for a PhD at the University of Cambridge.

Salary: €44895.96 + Allowances (GBP converted equivalent).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
