Detail information about job Research Assistant/Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

A post-doctoral position funded by St Baldrick's Foundation is available in the Division of Cellular and Molecular Histopathology, based in central Cambridge, working within the laboratory of Prof Nicholas Coleman/Dr Matthew Murray, to undertake a research project investigating malignant germ cell tumours (GCTs). This translational project seeks to identify and validate novel molecular drivers of pediatric GCTs and the development of clinical protocols for serum microRNA testing in childhood cancer diagnosis, prognostication and monitoring. The ultimate aim of this work is to improve outcomes for children or any young people with this disease.

Candidates should have a PhD, or expect to obtain one shortly, and a track record of success in molecular biology research. Relevant experience in handling biospecimens, patient derived sample processing, nucleic acid extraction, PCR and working with miRNA are essential. Experience with next generation sequencing technologies and data analysis is highly desirable.

The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, coupled with excellent communication, organizational and problem solving skills are required. Other duties/responsibilities are as outlined in the Further Information documents and include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, assisting in the supervision of student research projects.

Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of his/her PhD). The higher Research Associate salary should be backdated to the thesis submission date of the start date, whichever is the later.

Fixed-term: The formal grant end date is 30 June 2020, with the potential for an extension for a further year. Funding is renewed annually on satisfactory annual progress reports, which undergo scientific review by St Baldrick's Foundation.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
