Detail information about job Research Associate/Senior Research Associate CRUK Catalyst Award: CanTest Collaborative. Terms and conditions vacancy
Research Associate - £30,175 - £38,183
Senior Research Associate* - £39,324 - £49,772
Funding is available for 3 years.
A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Cambridge’s Primary Care Unit under the leadership of Dr Fiona Walter as part of the Cancer Research UK’s 1st Catalyst Award: the CanTest Collaborative (see https://www.cantest.org/). This multi-site programme is co-led between Cambridge and Exeter, and includes two other UK institutions, Leeds and UCL, and international partners in Houston-US, Seattle-US, Aarhus-Denmark and Melbourne-Australia.
This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher with an interest in primary care cancer detection/diagnostic research to examine which tests for cancer or risk of future cancer (such as blood tests, imaging tests, decision support tools etc.) can be performed in primary care, including existing tests, tests currently in secondary care, and new or emerging tests. We are examining five broad aspects of tests in the whole collaborative: do they perform adequately; are they acceptable to clinicians; are they acceptable to patients; are there specific safety issues arising from them; is usage of the test supported on health-economic grounds?
The successful applicant will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience and will have expertise in applied health research studies, ideally primary care, or multi-methods/quantitative health services research or healthcare epidemiology/statistics using routine datasets, to work over a series of candidate diagnostics (single or combinations of tests or testing pathways). They will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will be tasked with proactively seeking and maintaining appropriate collaborations. Successful candidates will also be expected to drive forward the project, working closely with the team members to accomplish scientific objectives. The successful applicant must be able to plan and prioritise to meet deadlines and have excellent communication skills.
Other Information
Cancer Research UK’s Catalyst Award is among the most ambitious cancer research grants in the world, and this investment in primary care cancer research represents their acknowledgement of the importance of supporting international, multi-disciplinary teams willing to take on the toughest challenges in cancer – how to diagnose patients with cancer most effectively to improve outcomes for our patients.
*NB: The status of Senior Research Associate is awarded on the basis of individual merit and may be awarded to the successful candidate if approved by the Faculty Board of the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine
