Detail information about job Research Associate in Carbon Dioxide Capture. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work as part of a team with expertise to support our growing activities in carbon dioxide capture, by conducting research supporting our EU-Research Fund for Coal & Steel (RFCS) funded project ‘Functional Porous Carbon Materials Derived from Coal Tar for Energy and Environmental Applications’. This multidisciplinary European project unites leading engineers and scientists from CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas – Spain), CNRS (Centre National de la recherché scientifique – France), Heriot-Watt University (UK) and Universite de Liege (Belgium) to increase the viability and competitiveness of European coal tar distillation plants. Attaining this goal implies finding ways for the revalorization of coal-derived liquids that are currently of low value and are not used in high-end applications. Hence, this innovative European project aims at the development of novel porous carbon materials for energy and environmental applications using low value coal-derived liquids as the carbon precursors. In the project, Heriot-Watt University will evaluate the performance of previously synthesized porous carbons as potential adsorbents for CO2 capture applications. The project also incorporates industrial participation from both ends of the value chain (coal tar distillers and porous carbon manufacturers) to ensure that a significant impact of the project results on relevant stakeholders is attained.

The successful applicant must hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in chemical engineering or related discipline (chemistry, materials science, environmental/mechanical/materials engineer) with background in CO2 capture.

The post is available from 1st October 2017 for 24 months.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Susana Garcia Lopez at [email protected]

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts at Heriot-Watt.
