Applications are invited for two posts of Senior Lecturer in Intensive Care Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). These posts are being offered in association with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUHT) where the successful applicant will hold an honorary consultant contract in Intensive Care Medicine and Complimentary speciality. The post holder’s primary clinical base will be the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. The Royal Sussex County Hospital is undergoing a major rebuilding program and the Intensive Care Units will have a dedicated floor of 54 Intensive Care beds, with co-located imaging suites, offices, and seminar facilities.

The successful applicants will be an accredited Intensive Care Specialist with a background in anaesthesia or medicine with a substantial research background in the field of Intensive Care Medicine. The post is part of the continuing academic development in clinical and experimental medicine at BSMS and BSUHT. The school would consider appointing a suitably qualified and experienced applicant at Reader level.

This is a major element in the developing research strategy of the School, reflecting our interest in basic and applied sciences and clinical trials. The school and Trust have invested heavily in the infrastructure required, and has newly-built laboratory accommodation, a fully-functional and well-staffed CRF, modern imaging sciences centre, and recently-formed CTU, as well as SHORE-C, an international centre in psycho-oncology. Clinically the unit provides general and specialist Intensive Care Medicine services to a wide catchment in the region, supporting both acute medical and surgical units within BSUHT, based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

The Appointees will primarily provide support for the development of our research portfolio in Intensive Care Medicine. Contribution to teaching in the highly successful BMBS course is also a component of this post. The appointee would also be expected to be actively involved in teaching. He/she would be expected to undertake clinical activity as an Honorary Consultant in the Trust, working primarily at the Royal Sussex County hospital.
