Detail information about job Research Fellow in Intelligent & Autonomous Systems Towards Industrial 6th Sense. Terms and conditions vacancy

A Research Fellow post is available at the Surrey Technology for Autonomous systems and Robotics (STAR) Lab within the Surrey Space Centre of the University of Surrey.

The postdoc is expected to work on a three year project as part of a >£1 million research program on Industrial 6th Sense Technologies funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). The research focuses on developing autonomous software architecture to manage data of massive, connected sensor networks and build perception for situational awareness in industrial environments such as chemical and nuclear plants. The project aims to make new research findings and technological advancement in autonomous operation of complex systems in terms of improved reconfigurability, reliability and optimization. The postdoc is expected to work on and produce new algorithms and autonomous software. They will also be responsible for implementation and validation of the developed software on sensors and hardware systems, taking part in field trials.

The relevant project is collaborative between multiple departments within Surrey and a number of industrial companies and requires formal reporting through publications and presentations on a regular basis within the project consortium. The work is deemed applicable to cross-sector applications including energy, nuclear and space in the long term.

The applicants should have a Bachelor degree (2nd upper or above) and a PhD (or be near to completion) in relevant disciplines such as electrical engineering, computer science, and mechatronics, etc. R&D experience in autonomous systems, robotics and AI is needed. The position also requires strong programming and computing background (in C/C++, Matlab, or Python), hands-on abilities, and communication and team working skills.

This position is fixed term until October 2020 and is available from November 2017.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
