The College of Science within the University of Canterbury (UC) is seeking to appoint an exceptional academic leader to provide strategic leadership to the newly created School of Physical and Chemical Sciences Te Kura Matū. The Head of School will drive the continued development of excellence in research and teaching, while establishing and implementing an innovative and bold vision aligned to UC's strategic objectives.

With a PhD in a relevant field, you will be an internationally recognised academic at a senior level, able to demonstrate substantive management experience, including the leadership of transformational change. A proactive strategist and change maker, who is committed to making a difference; you will require outstanding interpersonal skills, along with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team to work with a sense of collective responsibility.

Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor - College of Science, you will thrive in an atmosphere of innovation and will demonstrate critical thinking along with creative and flexible responses in a challenging and dynamic environment. Proven ability to lead resourceful approaches to developing new funding opportunities will be essential, as will be a strong commitment to equity and diversity.

The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences Te Kura Matū has been created in mid-2017 from a merger of the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. With over 550 equivalent full-time students and approximately 50 full-time equivalent staff, the School conducts a wide range of research and offers a broad range of academic programmes. In addition to the core chemistry and physics courses, there are offerings in biological chemistry, environmental chemistry and physics, materials science, laser physics, medical physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.
