Detail information about job Research Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

A post-doctoral research associate position funded by the NC3Rs CRACK-IT Programme is available in the laboratory of Professor Paul Genever. The £1M CRACK-IT Challenge (“Osteo-Chip”) is to develop a cell-printed, microfluidic automated platform for osteoarthritis (OA) drug screening, it is being led by Alcyomics and includes the Universities of York, Newcastle, Nottingham, and Leeds. The overall aim of the Programme is to develop a high-throughput in vitro system for testing candidate Disease Modifying OA Drugs (DMOADs), to replace the need for in vivo models of OA. In York, we have engineered an immortalised clonal line of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that can differentiate into skeletal tissues. For the CRACK-IT Programme, this MSC line will be used to generate osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes for use in the in vitro OA models. A key part of the work will be to develop sophisticated MSC reporter lines that will allow real-time, non-destructive tracking of differentiation and disease status using secreted luciferase and fluorescent protein readouts. The project will be supervised by Professor Paul Genever (York) and Dr Georg Feichtinger (Leeds) and the appointed Research Associate will be working across both sites.

You will conduct research and contribute to the production of research for this project. The main duties include analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up research results; and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations, and public engagement and outreach activities. You will also contribute to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies, develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, provide guidance to other staff and students, and undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project.

You will have a PhD in Biology or a related discipline and have knowledge of stem cells (including mesenchymal stem cells), knowledge of in vitro growth environments and tissue engineering/regenerative medicine strategies. You will also have the ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and to adapt to continuously changing demands of a growing and dynamic research group as an effective team worker.

The post is 37 hours per week and available immediately for a period of up to 2.5 years.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Prof Paul Genever, Department of Biology, University of York, York YO10 5DD (telephone: +44 (0)1904 328649, email: [email protected]) or for an alternative contact email: [email protected].
