Detail information about job Programme Director - Tackling Slavery, Human Trafficking and Child Labour in Modern Business Programme. Terms and conditions vacancy

The British Academy, in partnership with the Department for International Development, is seeking to appoint a Programme Director to be responsible for the oversight of the Tackling Slavery, Human Trafficking and Child Labour in Modern Business Programme.

  • Research Funding

The Programme will fund up to ten research grants to strengthen the evidence base on tackling challenges related to modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour in modern business. The Programme aims to generate insights on how businesses can deliver an important Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 8.7) and how they can manage risks and create new commercial opportunities in the process.

The Programme Director will help maximise the opportunities for take-up of the research findings and impact and be responsible for day-to-day oversight of the programme. Funding of up to £125,000 is available for the duration of the contract of up to 16 or 17 months. It is anticipated that the research grant available will cover the salary and replacement teaching costs broadly equivalent to 0.3 FTE of the Programme Director's time, starting between 15 October and 15 November 2017.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding researcher who has an established and distinguished track record of publication in a relevant field and who is, therefore, likely to have completed his/her doctorate not less than ten years ago, or to have a similar length of equivalent academic experience. The Programme Director should be able to work and communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including academic researchers, businesses, policymakers and practitioners.

It is anticipated that s/he will be currently employed at a UK university or other UK institution of higher education. The Programme Director cannot themselves be involved with any of the individual proposals for support under this initiative. The essential criteria for this position are:

  • a)      In-depth knowledge and expertise in relevant subject areas.
  • b)      High esteem and standing within relevant research communities.
  • c)      A significant track record of publication.
  • d)     Well-developed networks within relevant research and policy communities.
  • e)      A track record of effective communication to a wide range of audiences.
  • f)      A strategic understanding of the environment in which the Programme operates.
  • g)      Ideally experience of working with businesses.
  • Value for money should be clearly demonstrated in the application.

For further information, including on how to apply, please email Dr Stephanie Appleton at [email protected]

The closing date for all applications is midnight on Thursday 28 September 2017.
