The Post
The post will support the work being undertaken in the Institute as part of the strategy on animal care and welfare. The post holder will primarily be responsible for the provision of animal care and welfare in the Tropical and Chronobiology aquaria at the Institute of Aquaculture. The successful post holder will have experience in the husbandry of fish and the routine maintenance and management of recirculating aquaculture systems. They will be expected to have a proactive approach to managing their daily responsibilities, identifying and resolving problems and prioritising tasks and will be expected to have a flexible approach to job requirements as some weekend and out of hours work will be required.
Description of Duties
The suitable candidate will carry out the following tasks to support the aquarium facilities:
- Monitoring and recording water quality in recirculating aquaculture systems.
- Maintenance and repair of recirculating aquaculture systems.
- Routine husbandry of rearing systems and fish.
- Assist in collecting data from experimental animals (eg, length, weight, sex).
- Assist in the preparation of samples for use in other laboratory procedures.
- Record and collate data from experiments/analytical procedures and perform preliminary analyses.
- Provide technical assistance to ensure the smooth running of aquaria and associated laboratories e.g. cleaning glassware, disposal of laboratory waste, maintaining stocks of consumables and be responsible for purchase of consumables to meet requirements of the various projects schedules and budgets.
- Carry out routine monitoring, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment as required.
