Summary of Responsibilities:

  • To mentor an allocated caseload of students who have been identified by Employability Team Manager/Senior Tutors/HoCA as “at risk” of leaving College and in need of specialist support.
  • To support students through individual strategies which assist them in achieving their chosen qualification. This will include developing effective coping strategies to deal with a range of issues that are barriers to success. This will include, but are not limited by, Looked after Children (LAC), young carers (YC), Youth Offending (YOT), mental health issues, substance abuse, sexual health and pregnancy.
  • To assess key issues affecting students’ progress and identify effective strategies to prevent learners dropping out of college into the NEET group.
  • Principal Duties

  • To make initial contact with parents in respect of student absence, to develop strategies for continued parental links and communication
  • To support the effective transition of identified students onto their chosen college course.
  • To forge and maintain relationships with a case load of “at risk” students and develop individual action plans to ensure they make good progress on their courses.
  • To develop #B&FCinspire Programme for students on one of the college key employability themes, through workshops, visits, events and other activities.
  • To establish and maintain close liaison with a range of local statutory and voluntary youth support agencies working in areas such as teenage pregnancy support, mental health, YOT, Care Leavers, drugs and alcohol abuse, etc, to assist in delivering support to college learners.
  • To take responsibility for the mentoring of an identified case load of students as directed by the Employability Team Manager.
  • Working closely with partner organisations, to ensure access to information, advice and guidance for any students who choose not to continue on their college course, in order to identify appropriate alternatives.
  • To work with college staff, students and partners to identify key issues  affecting student progress and potential strategies for preventing students falling into the NEET group.
  • To keep written records and the range of EC Reports in order to monitor progress against targets.
  • To compile written reports on the progress of the work, including issues arising, identifiable outcomes and impact on learners.
  • To assist in developing and delivering briefing and training events for college staff and staff working for partner organisations on good practice in supporting “at risk” students.
  • To attend meetings of appropriate college and external groups at the request of the Employability Team Manager.
  • To maintain an awareness of Health and Safety at all times and ensure that students are aware of safe practices and procedures.
