Detail information about job PhD Studentship - A Prospective Study of the Developmental Biographies of Great British Pathway Athletes.. Terms and conditions vacancy

Bangor University, School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences in collaboration with UK Sport, invites applications for a fully-funded four-year PhD studentship to commence in October 2017, with the following title:

A prospective study of the developmental biographies of Great British Pathway athletes.

Background and aim

The research programme will involve close collaboration with UK Sport. The research aim is to enhance UK Sport’s talent development pathway as part of a larger eight-year project. UK Sport is considered the world leader in talent identification and development in sport, and the proposed project is an important part of the UK Sport Performance Directorate’s strategic plan for the next ten years. The project builds on previous collaborations between UK Sport and Bangor University and, in particular, the Great British Medallists project. The current project will prospectively and longitudinally examine predictors of differences between higher and lower achieving athletes on the organisations Performance Pathway with regard to a wide range of psychosocial and socio-cultural variables, life events and life-style, physical characteristics, training and practice conditions, and the coaching environment. The successful applicant will have an aptitude for both advanced quantitative research methods and qualitative methods, and will be expected and supported to develop skills in machine learning/pattern recognition.

Arguably, the project team involves the largest and most diverse scientific group directly assembled to investigate super elite expertise development. The team is led by Professor Lew Hardy and Dr Gavin Lawrence and comprises of World leading Psychologists, Physiologists, and Motor Control and Learning scientists, together with World leading sports practitioners. The successful applicant will be expected to work alongside and under the supervision of this team during the 4-year PhD research program.

Candidates should have an excellent academic background, holding at least a 1st or strong Upper 2nd class degree. Full awards (stipend and fees), are open to UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements.

What the Studentship will cover

Full studentships cover the cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax-free maintenance grant (£14,553 per annum for 2017/2018 for full-time students, updated each year); there are additional monies set aside for conference attendance and there will be allowances for further research and subsistence costs to be covered by UK Sport.

Residential eligibility

To be eligible for a full award you must:

To be eligible for a fees-only award, you must be ordinarily resident in an EU member state, in the same way that UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK.
