Job DescriptionWe are looking to recruit an expert structural biologist to join the PDBe curation team. High-quality curation of new depositions is essential for PDB and EMDB to remain the authoritative global sources of biomacromolecular structure information. The work involves annotating preliminary PDB and EMDB submissions and extracting relevant biological information. PDBe staff annotate more than a third of all PDB depositions and more than half of all EMDB depositions.

The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe; (wwpdb.org) is a founding partner of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB; (wwpdb.org), which maintains the PDB, the global archive of 3D structural data on biomacromolecules. The PDBe team further maintains a number of databases that support deposition and advanced search and analysis services for structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists).

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 23 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and ExperienceYou should be computer-literate and possess a Masters degree or PhD in some area of structural biology or structural chemistry as well as a broad knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry. An in-depth knowledge of protein structure (including structure determination and/or analysis and validation) is essential. A few years of post-doctoral research experience in structural biology, as well as hands-on experience in the determination of protein structure are desirable.

The work involves extensive interactions with colleagues in the PDBe team as well as with international collaborators, depositors and users. Therefore, excellent written and oral communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team and attention to detail are required.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with Linux/Unix operating systems and molecular graphics software (PyMol, Coot, Chimera). Basic programming skills (e.g., in Python or Java) would be an advantage.

BenefitsEMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.
