Detail information about job Admissions and Conference Manager. Terms and conditions vacancy

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We are passionate about our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

Our scientists and clinicians are working every day to make a real impact on cancer patients’ lives. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, and today lead the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

We are a college of the University of London and a charity, and are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission.

The Admissions & Conference Manager is a highly-visible role within the ICR, responsible for the recruitment of our research degree students, and the organisation of our annual scientific conference. It requires project management, attention to detail, the planning of complex events, and clear, tactful communication.

This role would suit applicants with existing experience of working in higher education administration, but may also be of interest to postdoctoral scientists now wishing to pursue a broader role in a university environment. Alternatively, applicants might come from a background in event management or similar, with a demonstrably analytical approach to their work. Whatever their experience, by working in a small department in collaboration with our scientific leaders, the post-holder will develop an excellent grounding in the inner workings of a university.

One half of the role involves working with our academic staff to run our recruitment process, which is designed to select only the very highest calibre of students. The role requires a minimum of an undergraduate degree, proven experience of managing complex deadline-driven projects, and the confidence and ability to inspire trust in both applicants and staff.

Work relating to student admissions happens throughout the year, but is focused in our annual recruitment event in January/February. The post-holder is also responsible for the planning and organising of the whole-ICR scientific conference, which takes place off-site every summer. This event brings together scientists from across our research divisions, allowing the sharing of knowledge that epitomises our approach to inter-disciplinary discovery.

In order to be an effective conference manager, the post-holder should have some experience of organising events, have an excellent standard of written and spoken business English, and be demonstrably self-motivated.

This is an interesting role that will evolve over time. There are many opportunities to enhance the way we work, and new projects will increasingly require the post-holder’s expertise and guidance.

A full job description may be found on the ICR’s recruitment website. Interviews for shortlisted applicants will be held in Sutton on Tuesday 3rd October.

We consider all applications on merit and have a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of our staff.
