About the opportunityThe Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) is based in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at The University of Sydney, and is dedicated to the research, development, application and dissemination of autonomous and intelligent robots and systems for operation in outdoor environments. 

With major funding support from various government and industry partners, the ACFR has built up a successful agricultural robotics and digital agriculture technical and research program, ranging from the construction and fielding of robotic platforms and information systems, through to high-quality peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, as well as close interaction with national and international growers community: www.sydney.edu.au/acfr/agriculture. 

We are currently seeking a self-motivated and well-qualified researcher to lead the team in the translation of the theoretical and applied tasks of the agriculture robotics group, with a focus on our horticulture activity. This will provide an exceptional opportunity to work closely with academia and industry at the intersection of fundamental research into field-robotics, machine learning, data analytics and their application to agriculture. 

This is purely a research translation role with no teaching requirements.

We are looking for a Research Fellow in Agriculture Robotics: Translational Research who can demonstrate the following: 

  • Holds a PhD in robotics/mechatronics engineering or applied computer science.
  • Has a high-level understanding of fundamental algorithmic areas in robotics field: computer vision, machine learning, motion planning, numerical optimisation, estimation and filtering, classical control techniques and their relationship, and has a detailed understanding in one of the areas.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years, with potential for extension subject to funding and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
