Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

This position is being funded under the grant “Immigration and well-being’ by the Nuffield Foundation. Your role will be to investigate the relationship between immigration into local areas and various subjective indicators of well-being (life satisfaction, happiness etc.) representative of both the native and non-native UK population.

This full-time post is available from January 1st 2018 on a 24 month fixed term basis. The University of York is a Russell Group University and you will enter a thriving community of interdisciplinary scholars within the Environment Department, wider University and partner institutes concerned with exploring the role of the physical and social environment on human well-being.

You will conduct individual and collaborative research. The main duties will be: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up and dissemination of research results, and contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research.

As part of your role you will spatially link geo-referenced household survey datasets with immigration statistics and indicators of diversity and employ advanced econometric approaches to unravel the complex relationship between immigration and well-being. You will have the opportunity to work on a number of high-impact journal papers and reports with other members of the project team based at the University of York and the University of Stirling. It is also expected that you will take an active role in dissemination and interaction with key stakeholders and advisors.

You will:

  • Hold a PhD in Economics (or expected to do so by the start date of the project) in Behavioural Science or something equivalent.
  • Have experience/research interests in the ‘economics of happiness’ OR in the economics/geography of immigration.
  • Have significant experience with statistical programming such as Stata.
  • Be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, and communicate complex information, orally, and in writing.
  • Be expected to communicate the findings of the project by writing papers for publication in top ranked academic journals in economics and/or psychology.
  • Be expected to engage with relevant stakeholders and advisors when it comes to the communication of key research findings.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Have experience of systematically assembling large datasets surrounding well-being, particularly experience with using large scale longitudinal household datasets such as the British Household Panel Survey, United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study or something similar.
  • Evidence of innovative peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Have experience with using spatial analysis tools such as Arc view GIS.
