Detail information about job Senior Systems Support/Developer Analyst (Supercomputing Wales). Terms and conditions vacancy

The role holder will work as part of a professional service delivery team dedicated to the provision of an efficient, effective and quality driven Research Computing service to staff and students within the Corporate Administrative Academic Research and Learning and Teaching functions of the University.

Reporting to the Division Manager of Advanced Research Computing @Cardiff (ARCCA), you will be the Supercomputing Wales project specialist in supercomputing applications, playing a strategic role in driving forward technical developments in the area of High Performance and cluster-based computing. As a key member of the ARCCA team and Pan Wales Supercomputing Wales technical delivery team, you will foster collaborations and build partnerships with leading academics across the consortium to enable research using techniques at the forefront of innovative, high-performance computing (HPC).

Supercomputing Wales is a strategic programme of investment in Higher Education intended to change the way supercomputer facilities are used to support research activities in Wales. The programme is led by Cardiff University, in a consortium with Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea Universities, and HPC Wales Ltd. With an estimated total cost of close to £15m, the programme will fund the purchase and running of new HPC equipment, with two new hubs at Cardiff and Swansea universities, along with necessary technical posts to support the operation of the facilities. The programme will also support a new cohort of ‘Research Software Engineers’ to work with academic researchers to develop software codes and algorithms using the supercomputing facilities.

The programme targets include capturing more research funding for Wales, creating more highly-skilled research jobs, and increasing collaborations with other research-active partners, all built on improved HPC capacity provided through Supercomputing Wales. The programme is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund via Welsh Government (c. £9m in total), and by the university partners.

This position is full-time and is fixed term until 30 June 2020

You will provide a highly professional, friendly and customer focused face to the services offered by Cardiff Supercomputing Facility (Supercomputing Wales & ARCCA).

The role holder will take lead responsibility for:-

  • The specification, design, development, integration, testing and documentation of large or complex systems and their architecture, selecting the most appropriate design standards, methods and tools consistent with agreed research computing methodologies and ensure they are applied effectively. You will review others' systems designs to ensure selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources, and integration of multiple systems and technology. You will contribute to policies for the selection of architecture components. You will evaluate and undertake impact analysis on major design options and assess and manage associated risks. You will ensure that the system design balances functional, service quality and systems management requirements.
  • The specification of user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls. You will assess associated risks, and specify recovery routines and contingency procedures. You will assist with the translation of logical designs into physical designs.
  • The maintenance of application support processes, and check that all requests for support are dealt with according to agreed procedures. You will use application management software and tools to investigate issues, collect performance statistics and create reports.

The role may also involve the line-management and leadership of staff supporting technical and functional solutions and/or services in the role-holder’s technical domain.

Please be aware that Cardiff University reserves the right to close this vacancy early should sufficient applications be received.
