Salary: £32,548 – £35,550 pa with potential to progress to £38,833 by annual increments on achieving designated skills and experience.

Grade UH7

FTE (1.0 fte working 37 hours per week)

An excellent opportunity to join a dynamic Health, Safety and Workplace Wellbeing team. The post holder will play an integral role in H&S policy implementation to ensure good governance of Health and Safety at the University. You will also be expected to take responsibility for specific elements of the H&S Office proactive workload. This will mean that you will be required to work across the organisation on a range of interdisciplinary health and safety matters. A wide range of skills and experience are essential. The post holder must be a team player and provide a high standard of professional and technical health and safety advice.

Main duties & responsibilities

  • To provide professional and proactive safety advice on all matters relating to current and anticipated legislation and best practice within agreed areas of expertise.
  • To take responsibility and maintain on-going development of the University’s monitoring activities -contributing to the planning, writing of reports and developing action plans in relation to them.
  • To take part in developing a safety audit programme for the University and its wholly owned companies, liaising with internal audit, reporting on the findings and ensuring that recommendations are followed through.
  • Playing a major role in the delivery of the University Health and Safety training and development programme, in collaboration with colleagues in the Health and Safety team.
  • To be involved in monitoring accident/fire safety statistics, investigating incidents and accidents, formulating and implementing any follow-up actions that may arise and collaborating with the other safety advisers on fire safety management.
  • Promoting the Health, Safety and Workplace Wellbeing Office and representing it at all times in a professional manner that is focused on the strategic objectives of the University.
  • To work with colleagues at the university and within the office on wellbeing initiatives contributing the university’s wellbeing framework.

Skills and experience needed

Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with proven Health and Safety knowledge, training and evidence of practical implementation (e.g. NEBOSH certificate). Preferably a Graduate or Chartered member of IOSH (evidence of continuous professional development).

  • Experience of health and safety management in a large organisation, preferably in a multidisciplinary
  • Experience delivering group training and initiatives on a range of health, safety and wellbeing topics
  • Experience investigating incidents and producing investigation reports with learning outcomes
  • Use and maintenance of IT information management (database) systems (IT literate)
  • Experience undertaking internal audits and inspections
  • Self-reliant, flexible with the ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Ability to adopt a ‘hands on’ approach, taking the initiative and leading where appropriate
  • Committed to professional and self-development

Qualifications required

Scientific/Engineering Degree.
